Make room for play

Simple ways to get started.

A few little invitations to connect.
Follow the child’s lead and make it your own.

  1. Play idea 1

Choose a picture set and keep the board within reach during a familiar routine.

  2. Play idea 2

Point to a picture as you speak, then pause and respond to the child’s message in any form.

  3. Play idea 3

Use the cards to comment, greet, make choices or say stop. Keep the child’s existing AAC system available.

Print & prepare

Print only the pages you need, single-sided on US Letter paper at Actual size / 100%, with automatic portrait/landscape orientation. Pages 1–3 are landscape communication boards; pages 4–6 are portrait picture-card sheets. Page 7 is the original AAC options handout and retains its original page size; use Fit to printable area if printing that page on Letter paper. Check one page before printing the rest.

Choose picture set A, B or C. Keep the 35-word board whole. The matching eight-card sheet can stay whole or be cut along the card borders by an adult. Laminate for repeated use if helpful, and keep cut cards under adult supervision.

Keep the board easy to see and reach. Model pointing while speaking naturally, allow time to respond, and acknowledge gestures, sounds, speech and picture selections. The larger cards are another layout option, not a prerequisite for using the board. Keep the person’s established AAC system available. The original handout is included as supplied; check providers for current app availability and terms.
